Bexleyheath and Crayford MP, Rt Hon Sir David Evennett, has blasted the BBC for the huge salaries paid to celebrities and the increasing salary costs, whilst at the same time ending funding for free TV licences for the over 75s. The BBC published its executive salary list yesterday (2 July) as part of its Annual Report and Accounts for 2018/19.

Sir David commented: “The BBC has a substantial licence fee, and paying enormous salaries for executives, newsreaders, presenters and stars will not be popular with their viewers.

“I am very disappointed with the BBC’s recent actions, particularly reneging on the agreement to continue with free TV licences for over 75s. I was also disappointed with the response to my letter from Director General, Lord Hall, and the fact he is continuing to allow salary increases for already highly paid presenters, and was surprised at the number of senior BBC executives earning over £200,000.

“Whilst I remain a supporter of the BBC, I really feel they should look again at their recent decisions and better utilise their resources”.
