On Wednesday evening (7 December) MPs overwhelmingly voted in favour of the timetable set out by the Prime Minister, Rt Hon Theresa May MP, to trigger Article 50 by the end of March 2017 to begin the formal procedure of leaving the EU.
The symbolic motion also included a provision for the Prime Minister to publish her strategic plan for Brexit before Article 50 is triggered.
Among the MPs who voted in favour was Rt Hon David Evennett, MP for Bexleyheath and Crayford. Mr Evennett commented: “The people have decided, and the Government will now implement the decision for Britain to leave the EU.”
“The Government is determined to make a success of Brexit, and outside the EU the UK will a fully independent, sovereign country. We will decide for ourselves how we control immigration and we will also be free to pass our own laws.”
