The review will look at how we can ensure university is accessible to young people from all backgrounds, that it is supported by a funding system that provides value for money for both students and taxpayers, incentivises choice and competition, and delivers the skills that our country needs.
The wide-ranging review will be Chaired by Philip Augar, a leading author and former non-executive director at the Department for Education. The panel will comprise of experts across post-18 education and the business world.
Rt Hon David Evennett, MP for Bexleyheath and Crayford, has welcomed the review, announcing his support for this in the House of Commons Chamber on Tuesday (20 February). Mr Evennett also asked the Education Secretary, Rt Hon Damian Hinds MP, a question about the review. Speaking in the Chamber, Mr Evennett commented: “I welcome my right hon. Friend’s statement and strongly support his review. It is essential that we deliver the skills that our country needs, and give opportunities for all. Will he ensure that the concerns and views of business and industry are taken into account in the review?”
Mr Hinds responded: “It is vital that the views of industry and business are taken fully into account. I know that the independent panel will listen to them carefully.”
