Following the announcement that Rt Hon Sir David Evennett had decided to step down at the General Election on 4 July 2024, members of the Bexleyheath and Crayford Conservative Association have chosen local man, Mark Brooks OBE, to be the Conservative Candidate. Sir David had been the Member of Parliament for the constituency since 2005 representing Barnehurst, Bexleyheath, Bostall, Crayford, Northumberland Heath, the Pantiles and Slade Green.
Mark was born locally, has lived in the borough for over 50 years and went to Bedonwell primary school and BETHS grammar school. He was was the first member of his family to go to university and was awarded an OBE five years ago for charitable work supporting victims and survivors of domestic abuse. He also has an honorary doctorate for his work in men's health, suicide prevention and domestic abuse.
Mark has served our community as a Barnehurst Councillor and a school governor at two Bexley primary schools. He is married to Fiona.
If elected, Mark's top campaign priorities include:
- Lower taxes
- Tougher immigration controls
- A crackdown on crime and increasing the visibility of police in our community. He will also oppose any other attempts to close Bexleyheath Police Station which the Labour Party has tried to do.
- Supporting appropriate housing with adequate parking - that local people can afford to buy
- Putting pressure on local heath chiefs to cut waiting lists and opening GP surgeries for longer - alongside continuing to increase services at Erith hospital, Queen Mary's Hospital and local chemists. Queen Mary's already has a new £10 million local testing centre.
- Improving local rail lines and supporting the rights of motorists. This includes opposing any plans by Labour's Sadiq Khan and his Labour friends Starmer and Rayner to bring pay per mile taxes for local drivers and Blackwall Tunnell tolls.
Mark Brooks OBE, the Conservative Candidate for Bexleyheath and Crayford: "It is an honour and privilege to ask, as a local man, for the good people of Barnehurst, Bexleyheath, Bostall, Crayford, Northumberland Heath, the Pantiles and Slade Green to vote for me to be our Member of Parliament.
I will always put the law-abiding tax-paying majority first. Those who work hard, saved hard for their retirement, the families, the young men and women who want to get on and of course, supporting those who need extra help.
Our area is the best place in London to live, work, bring up a family and start a business. I will do all I can to keep it that way. A tax-cutting, immigration-controlling Conservative Government will deliver.
We are already stuck with the Labour Mayor Sadiq Khan for another four years. A man who is trying to destroy our suburban way of life and dislikes anyone who wants to own or drive a car. His best mates Starmer and Rayner would be a disaster for us here and for the whole country too."
Rt Hon Sir David Evennett, said: "I am delighted that local Conservatives have chosen my good friend, Mark Brooks OBE, as the Conservative candidate for Bexleyheath and Crayford at the General Election. I have every confidence that he will serve our community as a first class Member of Parliament and I would urge everyone to support him at the ballot box on Thursday 4th July."
