Following the General Election held on 4 July 2024, the constituency changed from a Conservative-held seat to a Labour-held seat, primarily due to Conservative voters either choosing not to vote or choosing to vote Reform (See result below).
This was against the backdrop of an excellent local candidate (Mark Brooks OBE) who ran a first class campaign focusing on the key issues that concern everyone across Bexleyheath and Crayford. This included:
- Cutting tax
- Huge cuts in immigration – both legal and illegal
- More visible policing with a focus on burglary, car crime, anti-social behaviour and knife crime
- More prisons
- Ending Labour’s war on the motorist
- More GP appointments and services at Erith Hospital
Following the result, Mark Brooks, said:
“Thank you to everyone who supported me at the ballot box on the 4th July.
“As a local working class Conservative, the result was of course disappointing, given the campaign focused on the core issues of cutting immigration, cutting tax and more people. Those who normally vote Conservative were fully aware of the consequences of not doing so this time and I hope that over the next few years we are able to regain their support.
“Ultimately, it now means the people of Bexleyheath and Crayford are represented by a Labour MP who does not share their values nor agrees with their views on the key issues that concern them. I hope to spend the next years holding him and the Labour Government to account.”
