Earlier today (24 January), the Supreme Court Justices voted by eight to three against the Government, meaning that Parliament’s approval is required before the Government can trigger Article 50 and formally begin the UK’s departure from the European Union.
Rt Hon David Evennett, MP for Bexleyheath and Crayford commented: “in response to the Supreme Court ruling, I welcome the announcement by Brexit Secretary, Rt Hon David Davis MP, that we will shortly introduce legislation to press ahead with invoking Article 50 and formally begin the process of leaving the EU.”
“My constituents rightly expect us to get on with implementing the decision made in the referendum on 23 June 2016. I strongly support this approach.”
“The Court’s ruling today will not alter the Government’s timetable to invoke Article 50 by the end of March 2017”.
